More to come!

I have many, many, more pictures to scan and post. Please check back often. Also, some of the pictures are of people I haven't been able to identify, so if you have any information, please contact me.

I'd love to hear from anyone related to the Gutmann - Krause family in any way, or even just anyone with an intrest in geneology.

Thanks for looking!

Another family photo

This is Grete and Otto, I'm not sure who the child is.

"Leni" Gutmann

These are pictures of "Leni", by best guess as to who this is, is one of Grete's sisters, also known as Helene or Leny Gutmann.

This is Mathilde Baronin Gunzburg, Grete's mother and my great great grandmother. According to the Arnbom book she lived from 1866-1917. I would very much like to know more about Mathilde and her family. I am especially intrested in my matrilineal line, but have not been able to go any further back then this.

Grete as hansel?

As best as I can tell, this says "Grete Krause as Hansel in Hansel and Grettel" however the person pictured does not look the same as the person I know as Grette.

This is a picture of Margarethe Gutmann (Grette - my great grandmother) on the left, and her sister Anna Gutmann (Nanny) beside her. Nanny was killed during WW2.

Family tree from the Arnbom book

This is the family tree from the back of the Arnbom book mentioned below. It has proven to be very useful. (you can see my various pencil notes)

Pictures coming soon!

I finally got the scanner working again, so I will be posting pictures over the next couple of days. I have quite a few pictures of Manon and family, some of her parents Otto and Grette, I even have one of Grette's mother, taken in the late 1800's - and many of people I can't identify. Perhaps once I post people can help me figure out who some of the people are.

Friedmann, Gutmann, Lieben, Mandl, Stakkosch by Marie-Theres Arnbom

A wonderful book came out in 2002 that tells the history of five families in Vienna. The Gutmann family is one of them. You can find the book here; http://www.amazon.de/Friedmann-Gutmann-Lieben-Strakosch-Familienportr%e4ts/dp/320599373X/sr=8-3/qid=1158764002/ref=sr_1_3/302-1044780-3078468?ie=UTF8&s=gateway

The book is in german, but I have gotten a bit of help reading it. I will post highlights soon. There is a very helpful family tree in the back, as well as some wonderful pictures. I emailed with the author a bit when I found out about the book and her aunt knew my grandmother Manon!

The biographical profile is underwritten by a grant from the Lotte Lehmann Foundation, which is also providing rare materials of interviews, masterclasses and performances from its exhaustive archive of Madam Lehmann`s career

At the 30th anniversary of her death, the WFMT Radio Network presents a two hour biographical profile of Lotte Lehmann, one of the most vibrant and powerful figures in the history of opera and lieder singing and a uniquely influential pedagogue through her strongly imaginative teaching and dynamically charismatic masterclasses that were intenationally televised.
Lotte Lehmann - Her Life and her Living Legacy comprises an appreciation of Madame Lehmann`s artistry in opera and lieder and an assessment of her impact and influence as a singer, teacher and guide both in her own time and posthumously. The documentary utilizes unique historic and contemporary resources from the Lotte Lehmann Foundation and new materials specially recorded for this feature by the WFMT Radio Network. It includes extracts from the Lotte Lehmann Foundation`s vast preservation program of recorded performances, masterclasses and interviews given by Madame Lehmann as well as interviews the Foundation has recorded with performers and others who recall her. Also from the Foundation`s archives are extracts from interviews and recitals by young artists who have benefited from educational and performing operations and awards the Foundation has set up, which introduce these highly gifted musicians to Lotte Lehmann's interpretations, teaching and philosophies in their own times.
Amongst those contributing to Lotte Lehmann - Her Life and her Living Legacy are soprano Carol Neblett, mezzo-sopranos Grace Bumbry, Marilyn Horne and Valerie Komar, baritone Thomas Hampson, musicologists Beaumont Glass (her biographer) and Charles Osborne, accompanist Graham Johnson, stage director and intendant Lotfi Mansouri, film maker Christopher Nupen, Gary Hickling, and President of the Lotte Lehmann Foundation Daron Hagen.
Amongst studio and live performances of Lotte Lehmann included in the feature are extracts from operas by Richard Strauss, who famously championed her as did Arturo Toscanini, Beethoven, Wagner, Korngold, Massenet and Puccini, and lieder and songs by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Strauss and Duparc.
Lotte Lehmann - Her Life and her Living Legacy is produced by the team that made WFMT`s special documentary profiles of Carlo Maria Giulini, Renata Tebaldi, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Luciano Pavarotti - host and producer Jon Tolansky and Executive Producer Steve Robinson.

An article

Here is the text of an article that appeared in the Philadelphia Jewish Voice.

Krause Family: This story involves Noah Kleiman a Jewish boy and his apparently non-Jewish girlfriend Nicole Edson. Nicole discovered the death certificate of her grandmother Manon Krause. At the suggestion of Noah’s mother Shawna Klieman (who is an avid genealogist) she entered into Google the name of her great-grandmother Margarethe Von Gutmann which appeared on Manon’s death certificate. Google directed her to my website where she was surprised to discover her ancestry and that her maternal grandmother was Jewish which of course made her Jewish. Nicole’s mother and grandmother died when Nicole was 13 and 12. While she knew that her grandmother had fled Austria during World War II, she never guessed that she was Jewish.
Nicole’s great-grandmother Margarethe Von Gutmann prepared a birthday celebration for Nicole’s great-grandfather Otto Krause featuring the famous opera singer Lotte Lehman. Otto fell in love with Lotte Lehman, and divorced Margarethe so that he could marry Lotte and follow her around the world while his children remained in Vienna with Margarethe. The children were barely able to escape the Nazis with help from Lotte Lehman. Otto Kraus died soon after they escaped.
The story ends happily as Nicole has reclaimed her Jewish heritage, and married Noah Kleiman on August 14, 2004.

A work in progress

I have been tracking down my family history for a few years now, and I want to share what I have found with others. I intend to use this space to share what I've learned, along with family photos.

Check back often, there is a lot of information I hope to add!
